DESCRIPTION The September 2026 newsletter centers on the lead-up to Formnext and the unveiling of MACHX, Nikon SLM Solutions’ new system for the mid-size segment of metal additive manufacturing, launching November 17th. A short film follows the engineering team behind the system and the standard they held themselves to throughout development. The issue also covers the partnership with Additive Assurance to embed AMiRIS Inside melt pool monitoring into the NXG platform, bringing in-process quality assurance to large-format builds. On the defense side, Nikon SLM Solutions and Nikon Advanced Manufacturing have been selected for two teams within Delta Qual 2.0, a $9 million America Makes program aimed at accelerating qualification for LPBF in the defense industrial base. Free Formnext tickets are also available through a dedicated page.

September 2026

Six years ago, NXG showed that large-format metal parts could be built at a cost that made the business case work. This month, we are sharing the story of what came next. Our new film follows the engineers behind MACHX, our new system for the mid-size segment, and the two words they kept repeating about their own prototypes until there was nothing left to say them about. With launch day at Formnext now just weeks away, it is the right place to start this edition.

Beyond the film, September brings the MACHX countdown, in-process quality assurance for NXG with Additive Assurance, a role in the Delta Qual 2.0 program for defense, and a packed 3DXpert User Group Meeting in Lübeck.

Here is what is shaping September.

NOT GOOD ENOUGH, UNTIL IT WAS

Not Good Enough Video

Six years after NXG proved that large-format parts could be built at a cost that made the business case work, one question kept coming up: what about everything else? Most of what the industry actually manufactures is not flagship parts. It is the mid-size segment, too demanding for a small system and not large enough to justify the largest one, and for a decade it has been offered compromises. This film tells the story of what our engineers built instead, and the phrase they kept repeating about their own prototypes: not good enough. They said it until there was nothing left to say it about. Watch the short film to see what came out of that work.

THE MACHX COUNTDOWN IS ON

MACHX Countdown

MACHX, our new laser powder bed fusion system for the mid-size segment of metal additive manufacturing, launches at Formnext on November 17th. It is built for the part of the industry that has long been stuck between two options: paying for capability it does not need, or accepting equipment that limits what it can take on. MACHX is designed to close that gap. Sign up on the countdown page to be among the first to see it, with updates delivered straight to your inbox as launch day gets closer.

QUALITY CHECKED DURING THE BUILD

Additive Assurance Partnership

Nikon SLM Solutions and Additive Assurance, based in Melbourne, Australia, have partnered to embed AMiRIS Inside melt pool monitoring into the NXG platform. Large parts are the highest-value and highest-risk work in metal additive manufacturing. A build that runs for days carries the cost of powder, machine time and post-processing before any defect is found. Integrating quality assurance into the system moves that judgment from after the build to during it. For manufacturers qualifying large-format parts for serial production, the evidence behind every part is now gathered while the part is being built.

FASTER QUALIFICATION FOR DEFENSE

Delta Qual 2.0

Nikon SLM Solutions and Nikon Advanced Manufacturing are part of two teams selected for Delta Qual 2.0, a $9 million program run by America Makes and NCDMM to address additive manufacturing qualification challenges across the defense industrial base. One team is developing bracketed qualification for laser powder bed fusion, so a qualified process can work across a range of parameters rather than one fixed set. The other is the program’s Red Team, which independently tests the new qualification approaches before they are adopted. Qualification is often the slowest step between a metal AM part and defense production. The goal of Delta Qual 2.0 is to make that step faster, without lowering the bar.

MEET US AT FORMNEXT

Formnext 2026

Nikon SLM Solutions will be at Formnext 2026, and we want to see you there. This year, our team will be revealing a new system built for where a large share of metal additive manufacturing production actually happens, addressing a segment of the market that has long been underserved by existing equipment. Alongside the reveal, our application and engineering experts will be on hand throughout the show to talk through your specific production requirements and help you understand what the new system means for your own operation. Stop by our booth to see what is coming next and start the conversation.
