ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING’S BIG IMPACT ON A SMALL TOOL

At Burgmaier, chips and oil residue on machined components were causing frequent disruptions during the measuring process, leading to an average of five machine downtimes per shift.

Burgmaier addressed the issue by leveraging Nikon SLM® technology to redesign the blow-out tunnel. The new design featured round air ducts, different duct cross sections, and varied outlet angles. Using the SLM® 280 from Nikon SLM Solutions, the team manufactured six tunnel variants in a single production run, streamlining testing and optimization. Made from lightweight AlSi10Mg, the redesigned tunnels ensured more effective and thorough cleaning.

Key Benefits:

  • Zero Downtime: The redesigned tunnel completely removed chips and oil, eliminating machine interruptions.
  • Increased Productivity: Machine utilization increased by 7%, boosting overall efficiency.
  • Cost Savings: Burgmaier achieved annual savings in the high five-figure range.
  • Lower Noise Levels: The new design also reduced operational noise.

With Nikon SLM® technology, Burgmaier turned a major production challenge into a significant improvement in quality, efficiency, and cost savings. Download the full case study to learn more.
