THE PROJECT: PUMP IMPELLER ENHANCEMENT

A collaboration between Eureka, Nikon SLM Solutions, and Interspectral brought forth a reimagined Pump Impeller. Designed by Eureka, printed by Nikon SLM Solutions, and Interspectral providing analysis software making the advanced SLM monitoring data easy accessible, this project stood as a testament to the potential of additive manufacturing.

CHALLENGES & OBJECTIVES

Compared to traditional manufacturing, additive manufacturing solves some of the existing limitations as it allows more freedom in design, better production tolerances and a shorter delivery time – an additional benefit is that AM produced parts also typically have better material properties.

When all this is taken into consideration, Eureka can produce a new design especially for AM production where form, fit and function is optimized, and the final part is near net shape to the 3D model used during production.

ACCELERATING PRODUCTION WITH ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

Traditionally, an impeller of this size would require a 20-week lead time. With additive manufacturing (AM), that timeline is drastically reduced to just one week.

Beyond speed, AM revolutionized the analysis phase by enabling rapid component qualification, thanks to its inherently digital workflow. This data-driven approach, combined with robust monitoring capabilities, allowed manufacturers to oversee operations in real time, ensuring precise process control and quality improvements.

Through continuous data collection, we captured and archived images post-recoat and post-exposure. This allowed us to monitor key parameters in real time, trigger machine pauses when necessary, and notify operators of potential corrections—such as additional recoating. Over time, the logged data, including power and set values, becomes a valuable resource for post-process analysis and documentation.

INTEGRATED DIGITAL SOLUTIONS: SLM.Link & SLM.Quality

To further enhance process transparency and quality assurance, Nikon SLM Solutions leverages SLM.Link and SLM.Quality:

  • SLM.Link – A communication interface based on the OPC-UA protocol, enabling real-time data reporting. Machine owners can track key metrics—such as build job status and process parameters—via remote production management software, ensuring full visibility into AM activities.
  • SLM.Quality – Conducting post-build analysis, SLM.Quality helps job and machine owners evaluate process data to confirm adherence to predefined tolerances. This ensures part consistency and process repeatability, which are critical not only for in-house production but also for global, distributed manufacturing networks. Additionally, SLM.Quality facilitates the generation of comprehensive quality reports, reinforcing traceability and compliance.

THE POWER OF NIKON SLM® TECHNOLOGY

Utilizing the advanced capabilities of the SLM®280 proved to be a game-changer for Eureka. Their initial collaboration in 2019 resulted in an impeller that truly showcased the immense potential of AM. The product was 70% lighter, had lead times cut from 20 weeks down to a mere 1, and boasted enhanced corrosion resistance when subjected to high temperatures.

COLLABORATION WITH NIKON SLM SOLUTIONS

Eureka’s choice to partner with Nikon SLM Solutions and Interspectral was primarily driven by the cutting-edge software ecosystem and integration possibilities, which includes SLM Link and SLM Quality. Their state-of-the-art monitoring solution (hardware and software) also played a pivotal role in this decision, with AM Explorer providing a full 3D view of all the data channels.
